The client —
La Petite Jumelle is one of leading companies in Greece specializing in the manufacture of custom made high-quality packaging, combining industrial with handmade production. It produces luxury boxes, classer, press kits, gift boxes, samplers, catalogs, stand, cartelins, etc.

The objective —
La Petite used this design object as the New Year corporate gift, distributed to all its customers: miscellaneous companies in Greece of all sizes. The design objective was to create an environmental wake-up call for 2019. We happily responded to this request since we share a common vision with our client upon this matter.

The brief —
La Petite created a custom made packaging construction, using paper material and asked us to create a design concept for a series of coasters that would be placed inside this object. The final object was requested to remain in the form presented here, made of laminated black paper sheets. The printing technique would be hot stamping. We had the freedom to do some minor construction interventions for the final product.

The creative concept –
Considering that the object is intended for companies and workplaces, we wanted the end result to be a stylish and beautiful item you want to keep in your office. Our idea was to address awareness towards the different levels the planet is threatened: the water, the soil and forests, and the air. Due to the sensitive subject we chose to use illustration to convey our message in order to have a friendly look & feel.

We created 3 unique key visual matching each different topic: a fish, a tree, a cloud and additionally a generic theme for the planet itself. The texts at the backside of each coaster present the activities of mankind that destroy the planet. Therefore the fish, the cloud and the trees characters have a sad face in the front of the coaster. We created an interactive connection between the front and the back in a way that the illustration at the front reflects as an emotion the message of the back. You can discover this effect by flipping the coaster horizontally.

In the same way, if you rotate the coaster 180° the message changes totally. The back text is a set of proposals suggesting positive ideas for actions an individual could take in order to reduce his/her carbon footprint and contribute towards a better environment. Respectively by flipping the coaster horizontally the characters have a smiley face! Inspired by the Social Media mechanisms and project management software used in offices (Slack, Skype, etc.) we wanted the characters to be used as emoticons or status indicators within the work environment. E.g: Now I'm sad, now I'm happy.
