The Brightmoor Farmway Cookbook

The Brightmoor Farmway Cookbook
Semester abroad at the University of Michigan (USA) - 2012

The cook book of the Brightmoor Community was born from the desire to create something for the neighborhood which, not only can be sold, but above all that could represent it and that reinforce the sense of community.

What started as a small and almost inconceivable idea has become an overflowing book of voices and an opportunity to create a bond between the neighborhood and the students of the University of Michigan.
The introductory email sent to the neighborhood had an unexpected and overwhelming feedback: everyone had a story and a recipe to share. It soon became evident that the stories and the voices of the community would have shaped the book and not the recipes.

What is the Brightmoor Farmway?
The Brightmoor area, originally built in the 1920s due to the multitude of workers who migrated to Detroit, for 50 years was a thriving neighborhood with a strong community life. In the early Seventies it began to change: people started to move to the suburbs and drugs, crime and prostitution spread around.

In the summer of 2006, when over 50% of the properties were abandoned and the area degraded and dangerous, Riet Schumack and Sheila Hoerauf gave birth to the Brightmoor Farmway project: a program to remove children from the street and create a healthy and educational environment , which included the cleaning of the green areas in the Brightmoor neighborhood and the subsequent cultivation of vegetables and flowers. Soon the project turned into a real vegetable garden, which allowed young people to earn a little bit of money by selling the fruit of their hard work at the Detroit Farmers Market.
