Haptic Listening Chair
The Haptic Listening chair. The aim of this project was to design a way of recreating the haptic feedback you get at a live music event in the home.
When listening live event we not only hear the music but feel the vibrations through our body.
Several possible ideas were investigated from stand alone units that used UltraSonic haptics to project the feeling in free space to simple add on pads that could be attached to a chair.
It was decided that a listening chair similar to the emes lounge chair would be the best solution offering a high end listening experience and a statement piece of furniture.  The mid century modern style still has mass appeal to the sort of people who have their own listening rooms.

Before the final designs were drawn up many experiments and prototypes were built
Once I had figured out all the dimensions and where best to place the haptic transducers the final plans were drawn up and FEA analyses was used to ensure the frame could take the cyclic loads. Custom steam bent 25mm ply panels were produced to create a pre-production test unit along with a custom 8 channel amplifier and DSP to process the audio.
