Cowboy Bebop Tribute Concert

For this project, I was tasked to design, direct, and edit new video and graphic content for a tribute concert at Anime Expo. This Cowboy Bebop set was commissioned alongside a set for "Code Geass."

I worked with VFX Artist Josh Wood to composite and animate 45 minutes of footage for the event to use as a backdrop for the musicians.

I developed three looks for the stage. The "Warhol" look is emblematic of the main design motifs of the series itself. Solid blocks of color with black cutouts match the liveliness and zest found in most of the Bebop.inspired jazz prevalent in the show.

It was paired with livelier songs like "Rush" and "Bad Dog, No Biscuits"

The "Muted" look was meant for quiet moments on the stage. We also spawned a few different color palettes from this look for different songs. "Blue" and "Spokey Dokey" are two examples for this setup.

The "Minimalist" look inverts the iconic Bebop look for a more dark and foreboding feel. This was used for some of the more sinister pieces performed in the set.

We also designed and animated close to one dozen different looping sequences to be displayed on the main stage. This sample from "Rush" is a great example of how we utilized the designs and motifs from the source material to create brand new assets, compositions, and animations to compliment footage pulled from the show.

We also took a great deal of care to upres and crop the original 4:3 imagery into great 16:9 compositions for dramatic effect.
