The Contemporary Arabesque
The Contemporary Arabesque

The Arabesque is a form of artistic decoration common to Islamic art, consisting of "surface decorations based on rhythmic linear patterns of scrolling and interlacing foliage, tendrils" or plain lines. Arabesque focuses on botanically implausible leaf forms and imaginary motifs like the half palmette.

Arabesque has existed since the 1500's, primarily being executed through drawing and sculpture. This series of illustrations attempts to reinterpret the traditional concepts and ideas of Arabesque with digital technologies and contemporary visuals. The series moves in a visual chronology, with the first image being the most true to Arabesque, and the last image being the most contemporary.
