The Ultimate Trip
ISTD Award: Pass

On 2nd April 1968, at the Uptown Theater, ‘2001: A Space Odyssey’ premiered for the first time. Many years on, 2001 is widely regarded as one of the finest cinematic achievements of the 20th century and “one of the greatest and most influential films ever made.” The Ultimate Trip was designed back in 2018 to help celebrate the 50th anniversary of Stanley Kubrick’s masterpiece.

The book itself, in shape, is a direct reference to the Monolith. A key aspect of the film. The dimensions of the book are to proportion as it retains the flexibility and practicality of being able to hold and read the publication.

The publication is divided into four main chapters parallel to the movie itself. ‘The Dawn of Man’, ’Lunar Journey’ (Untitled), ‘Jupiter Mission’ and ‘Jupiter and Beyond the Infinite’. The chapter dividers are also a nod to Kubrick’s title card design.

The film has very little dialogue (There is no dialogue in the film for 88 minutes) which informs the very clean and minimal style throughout the publication.
