The Miseducation of Ms. Logan

NEW YORK, NY, Sep. 10, 2012- Elizabeth Logan, a junior at City College is making the decision this semester to stick it out in a course she loves with a difficult instructor. This is often an issue that plagues many students each semester. They take a class either because it is a requirement or a chosen elective and come to find that although it is a subject they love, they are stuck with an instructor whose teaching methods aren’t in sync with the way they learn.

This semester Elizabeth is taking a required pre-calculus math course. When asked whether or not she likes the course, she stated, “I don’t.” Not on the premise that she does not understand the material, but because the instructor “force-feeds the information with no opportunity to think about what’s being presented.” Elizabeth considers herself “naturally good” at math, however, it’s the frustration of wondering how she will receive the help she needs if and when she does that concerns her. Unfortunately, the option of group-study seems to be out of the question as well according to Elizabeth. “I know now that a tutor is my best and only option because my peers are just as, if not more clueless than I am,” she goes on to mention.

Many students may not be aware of their options when it comes to alternative help for course work they are struggling with. Some find that like Elizabeth, their instructors teaching methods don’t help them absorb information. Others find that the subject itself is difficult and they need one-on-one attention to understand the material. For these students, it is important that you seek out a tutor. City College offers tutoring services a range of subjects including Foreign Language, English, Political Science, Physics and Math. If you are looking for a tutor, you can visit the following website http://www1.cccny.cuny.edu/current/tutoring_services.cfm. Here you have the option to schedule an appointment for tutoring in your selected subject area. Don’t wait until it’s too late!
