Brief
Soda Stream is a brand of fizzy drinks maker popular in the 1970’s and 80’s.
You are asked to design a fizzy drinks maker that is to appeal to the household market of today.
What has changed? How are we different? You will need to research and explore the history, design and life of the Soda Stream or other similar products and identify its strengths and weaknesses as a product and why a clearly useful piece of household equipment went ‘out of fashion’.
Think about the needs and consumer trends of the current market and identify the features that you will need to consider and encompass within your design to ensure that it meets contemporary user needs (e.g. shape, form, colour, technology, usability, living spaces, lifestyles and the environment).
Solution
In response to this brief I decided to focus on how I could make the product appeal to the market of today and how I could improve its impact on the environment.
To do this I researched and found out that the main complaint with sodastream products is that when they try and emulate the branded flavours that we know and love they do it very badly, this is largely due to the fact that as humans we are creatures of habit and the recipies for thease flavours are very well kept secrets. we are also very brand conscious as such i thought that it would be good to explore the possibility of joining forces with one of the largest and most recognisable brands in the world, Coca-Cola. The Coca-Cola bottle and the Coca-Cola "swish" are both iconic in branding terms and I have incorporated them both into the form of my design.
In designing to be environmently concious I made my product so that it would use any used Glass Coca-Cola bottles for making you Coke at home promoting recycling and the fact that it is far more pleasent to drink from a glass bottle than from plastic, glass also keeps the fizz better.
