Approaches to Time

Exercise 4: MAKE
This video is focusing on the movement of time and areas of transition.  There are scenes of doors opening and closing, or plants swaying in the wind that show the movement of time, and then there are the scenes of the rain gutter or parking lots which are places of transition that don’t necessarily represent the passing of time but are rather more similar to memories of movement and passing through a place.   With regards to the audio it is focusing on more ambient noises of passing that someone might hear everyday, or even idle hummings of a distracted mind. These relate to human identity by inspiring self reflection and how one might exist in time as a temporal being.
Exercise 3: TAKE
This project is focusing on comedic imagery and demonic energy.  I’m using a lot of pop culture references from videos that are a stark contrast to the audio of the video itself, as well as using different editing techniques to heighten the discomfort of some of the imagery by use of oversaturation and cutting.  The goal is to create discomfort and allow a measure of comedy, and by using interesting imagery that one questions the existence of it does just that.
Exercise 2: SEE
This project responds to the audio created in the HEAR portion.  I filmed a toy in a dark atmosphere that simulates an otherworldly demonic energy that is demonstrated throughout the audio.  With repeating imagery and saturated photo and video, it creates an unsettling ambiance that makes the viewer uncomfortable by questioning if the character is the one who is screaming or if they are the ones that are causing the wails of pain.
Exercise 1 : HEAR
The goal for this piece was to create a sense of anxiety and fear.  The ways I tried to accomplish that were by using the sounds in unnatural ways, or creating this consistent wailing noise that’s meant to make the listener uncomfortable, that maybe there is someone in pain or dying somewhere.  The anxiety comes from repetitive noises, simulated cries of pain coming from nowhere, and even through the ambient noise as heard throughout with a sharp clear beep that simulates a heart monitor, but it’s removed from the body so it’s as if one is in a coma.

Sounds:
Turn signal
Car starting
Shower Running
Water pouring
Slow clapping
Faucet spraying
Fast clapping
Roar
Bellow
Screech
