Although of elementary origin, throughout the evolution of mankind, tableware utensils have become indispensable to proper dining etiquette rules in western culture. Being some form of lengthening of the hand itself, fingers are the body parts which most frequently come in contact with these utensils. From then on, the knife being the central component of the conception, one could but notice how the thumb lay right in the centre of the knife, also being the junction point between the blade and the handle. Subsequently, the knife’s volume was designed compliantly with the thumb, driven by a curve encircling the knife. This undulated optical effect does not only serve aesthetical purposes, but also favours the fashioning of both the blade and the arch of the handle.
