"Perest" is a Turkish suffix, which is usually added to the names of various sacred objects to signify particular religious beliefs in relation to those objects. On the other hand "mekan" means architectural space. Consequently, when these two are constructed together as "mekanperest," this new term makes everybody to think about a group of people, who believe in the sacred nature of architectural space and environment.
"Mekanperest" is the name given to a social responsibility project of the EMU, Faculty of Architecture, in which the academic staff of the Faculty publish regularly a Sunday attachment to a local Turkish newspaper called "Havadis." The idea was to increase the public awareness about the professions related to design and built environment and to share the opinions of academic architects and designers about the spatial and environmental problems in Northern part of Cyprus with the local people.
