Water Map of the World

Water Map of the World
This acrylic model of the world map shows the uneven distribution of water across the world using no other visual representation than water itself. Water is stored in the basin above the map. The journey of a waterdrop begins at the bed of the basin, slowly trickling down on to the map below. Sometimes, it falls down by itself, lonely. Some other times, it joins other waterdrops to form a continuous flow of water, akin to a small waterfall. It leaves its last trace of existence through sound, plink, just milliseconds before re-joining the other waterdrops on the map. Together, they are no longer the waterdrops they used to be on the basin; now, they are confined by the ridges of the continent they reside in. Together, they are now the map themselves. They represent how different continents might or might not have the same water resources. They represent the water politics. They politicize.

This artwork was inspired by Zimoun with the calculated randomness throughout his installations. While the water flow might seem random at first, as time goes by, it becomes more and more apparent that some continents get more water than the others. This was achieved as a result of multiple trial-and-errors so as to deliver a deliberate message, a final outcome, while still giving out the impression of pure randomness to the viewers.
