YOU SPY WITH MY LITTLE EYE
You Spy With My Little Eye is a seven photo book series which explores the selfie trend on Instagram with the intention to make the viewer reflect on the modality and on the consequences of the current image sharing habits online.
Around 1400 selfies were retrieved from Instagram through the homonym hashtag and subsequently collected, catalogued, cut and then unified again within seven categories. These categories - pet, fashion, showroom, friends, traveling, guide, fit - were the result of the identification of the most common online selfies took in the most varied places e.g. in the bathroom, in the shop showrooms, at the gym.
Each page of the books, whose layout takes inspiration from the Instagram photo grid, contains a selfie. This selfie is centered within the page as we are looking at our Instagram wall and it is deprived of its main protagonist. In each book we find a repetitive visual narrative which wants to make us reflect on the importance of noticed and unnoticed elements (public and private space, people, objects) of the selfie and on the effective value of these photographs.
The project wants to give a new aesthetic and modality of consumption to this photo trend and to leave the viewer with some questions: How do we look at online selfies? Does the focus on ourselves impede to depict the surrounding properly? How can selfies in the most varied places be valued?
