Plagiarism, Parody, Pastiche—Social Change Poster

Marriage ≠ License to Rape
A mockup of the poster created for visual represntation of it living in the real word
This Project was done for my Advanced Graphic Design course at San Francisco State University with the premise of Plagiarism, Parody, and Pastiche. Our guidelines were to involve a topic of social change/awareness and we were to use the risograph printer on campus to create the poster. I chose to speak towards Marital/Spousal Rape as it is something that I feel is not widely recognized nor talked about yet happens to roughly fourteen percent of women in the US.

Using the layout style of a marriage license and the language of a court trial I created a poster that juxtaposes the male and female experience and lays out some of the difficulties women face when seeking legal action against their partner.
Above is just a little bit of the research that went into creating the content for
this poster.

Below is an iteration of the final design.
Below is the final file I created in Adobe Illustrator. It was originally going to be three colors, Blue, Black, and Red, but I was limited on ink and time so I reduced it to a two color design. Further down the page you will see the separated colors. With risograph printing, it works best to separate each color into a "plate" that can then
be scanned and added to the printing process.
Below is a photograph of the printed poster. I like how each print is uniquely different because of the offset nature of how the paper is loaded into and how it travels through the machine to receive its imprint.
Below is the Blue plate and then the Red plate that were created for this project. In Adobe Illustrator, I separated the colors in document and before printing turned the spot colors on so i could print them individually. With each color separated into black and white images (Film Positives), the scanning process of riso printing was able to create solid colors where there were solid lines and halftone dots created in grey areas. Had I not printed each page separately in black ink, the tones of the blue and red would change opacity and vibrance coming out of the riso as the scanner would read the blue and red as a lighter shade of black. This process is similar to other printing process like Screen Printing and Offset Printing which I am familiar with.
