Lecture 1

A better understand of judgement is needed if we want to improve our design ability in an intentional manner. Judgement is a key dimension in the process of design. The ability to make design judgements is what distinguishes a designer as a designer.

Some things can be seen, described and documented eg physical phenomenon patterns in human conduct. But other things cannot be seen immediately, including human experiences and observable practices.

Design involves experimentation with form in conjunction with imaging human situations and experiences

Embodied understanding ( an example of a phenomenologist, Merleau-Ponty)
-Knowing comes as much from embodied experience as it does from thought and reflection.
-Sensation leaves impressions on the body
-The body is a source of primary awareness: A 'bodily intentionally' that provides our initial grasp or sense of a situation, allowing us to cope with the ongoing flow of experiences

Body and senses are directly related. Experiences mediated by the senses like smell, sunlight,....

The senses inform our design judgements by developing an 'empathetic imagination' or turning a space to support and enhance human dispositions. The power of senses to matter beyond sensation but to become imprinted into your body and associated with our social experiences.

Lecture 2
Sensory environment in library: People should be quite and manner with self-discipline or else they could easily be seen as not fitting in.

Sensory environment succeed in producing this feeling because culture capital

What guildes our senses of not fitting into sensory spaces
-Habituated responses are organised by our body sense, the senses mediate theway our body understand what to do.
-We approach every situation with a set of embodied disposition-habitus that provide us with a bodily sense of our place in certain settings and spaces
-Our habitus is formed as a result of upbringing and then continues to be shaped by our experiences. It guides the way we improsive our way through encounters and experiences.
