Rise & Grind Bakery Branding

Branding, Illustration
It started with a name, an ampersand (that was already baked into some social media handles) and a good soundbite: "No $18 tarts...and no doilies."

Got it.

This was pretty much how the research meeting for this brand ended. The man behind Rise & Grind is a good friend who goes back many years. He's a no-bullshit craftsman who makes some of the best breads and baked goods I've ever had.

Since we knew the ampersand had to stay, that was pretty much my jumping off point for the visuals.
I started by interviewing potential ampersands, when none proved appropriate, I took to the sketchbook and started drawing some out by hand to see if anything good came of it...
Eventually, the ampersand from the logo font (Brandon Grotesque Black) proved to make the most sense.
For the store sign, I wanted something that echoed an old fashioned bakery. Something that predated the need for a responsive, scalable, crisp, little mark. The result was a large crest.
I wanted the sign to sum up the entire business model at a glance: open mornings and evenings, breakfast food, pizza, booze, and a weary but proud craftsman at the center of the whole deal.
Some of the sign elements ended up serving as a mean icon set on their own.
Rise & Grind Bakery is set to open Spring of 2019. In the meantime, check out the beautiful gallery of baked good photos on their instagram @riseandgrindbakerykc
