Low Tide on the Westport River

Low Tide on the Westport River

Through the camera I capture a view of the world around me.
The computer lets me interpret the way I see it.

A familiar scene framed through the lens of my camera. For me, this begins an exploration into digital imagery formed by light, color and shape. Digital media offers an exploratory work space where my camera and computer play together transforming my simple landscapes into new forms and compositions.
Pen and ink on paper, paint on canvas, a grease pencil on stone. These are the traditional tools of my trade. Technology offers with it a new set of tools. Pixels of light and color on a display become vehicles to present my visual perspective, a digital record of the landscapes around me that provide my inspiration.
I’m not a professional photographer - I take snapshots. The inspiration for my work comes from transitory scenes and fleeting images of land, sea and sky. An image captured spontaneously through my camera has an unstudied quality that becomes a starting point — transforming a single snapshot into a series of unique images.
The project began with a scene from the Westport River, a tidal estuary in coastal Massachusetts. I took this snapshot from a friend's dock on a springtime afternoon. As the tide went out that day, the current churned up the muddy bottom of the river and turned the water orange and pink. The sky reflected pale blue clouds in the shallow water. The far shore was a ribbon of bright blue. A scene as ephemeral as time opened a vision that goes beyond the camera’s field of action to an interpretation that is uniquely mine. I invite exploration by the viewer with the hope my work might evoke in them an experience all their own.
