Nothing's standard in Hotel in het huis van Deventer. Every city loft has its own identity and unique character. For one of their spacious residential kitchens I was asked to design a mural of 5 x 3 meters. One that would make the link with the old industrial past from the early 1900s of – my hometown – Deventer (NL). Around that time there were strikes taking place due to poor working conditions. Hence the illustration of the strong woman that I'd been given as the starting point. The eagle tattoo on her arm links to the coat of arms of Deventer. Furthermore, as socialists formed a large majority in the city council for years on end, the city was sometimes referred to as ‘Moscow on the river IJssel’. The design is a nod to this nickname using a vintage, soviet-style look. The buildings, cranes and the lorry are all inspired by the industry that existed in Deventer in the early 1900s.

The design of the mural lends itself really well for a screen print, using only two colors: red en black. To start I managed to create 25 copies. A few of them were given as a gift to the men and women who helped shape the hotel with its cool objects and great interior design. The other copies are for sale at the hotel. But you can also get a free postcard. Whatever floats your boat.
