I am the DISCO is an exploration of music public private space, and forms of popular culture. Disco was one of the most prevailing music genres of 1970s, the era when my parents were young adults. In Taiwan, where my parents and I were from, dance clubs were prohibited in the 70s when elsewhere in the world were not. Taiwanese young people were tempted by Western pop culture but could only receive it via TV shows, radio, vinyl and movies. In order to participate, secret house parties were held by college students for disco dancing where predominantly American disco music was played. It was as though they had a switch in their head; they shined like stars while dancing to the music on the dance floor, but switched off to normal life when the lights and music were off.
