The beauty of Black & White photography

Airplane above Tel Aviv, Israel [March 2019]
The picture above showcases a woman looking out of her plane window in the first place. The absence of other distractions lets the viewer focus on nothing but the central essence itself, enabling any viewer to carry his own experiences within the picture. Great photography is in constant dialogue with the viewer. But what has Black &White photography esspecially to do with this?
Why would I choose to shoot only Black & White? This question already came to my mind several times. Black & White in of itself offers outstanding possibilities regarding the simplicity of your work - if minimalism is actually what your going for. The absence of color buries the need of better composition and imagery.

There surely are many different categories in the broad realm of Black & White photography. Two possibilities to differ between them are the amount and the distribution of black and white color in the picture. The absence of color brings with it the necessity to draw the viewers attention directly to the subject of the shot. Means to achieve this are either luminosity, focus, light transitions or contrast.
Some would clearly argue, that the inability to use colors except for black and white, is quite stressing. Opposingly I would put emphasize on the fact, that this task and excercise can and will benefit one´s work in several ways: Firstly, the process of capture and edit is reduced to a minimum. Secondly, the small number of steps enables you to focus on each and every aspect more specifically. When shooting in color the necessary steps won´t differ that much, nevertheless there are more things obligatory to keep an eye on. By lowering this number more quality can be assured to your work in general.

The reduction of a shot to this simplicity buries a special type of beauty. In a era of strongly and colorfully congested pictures all over the internet - this approach strives for a more professional and deeper meaning and perception in the eyes of any viewer. Here lies the true beauty of Black & White photography.
Following this argumentation, I would encourage everyone to shoot more in Black & White.
In order to improve one´s skills and widen one´s horizon regarding the use of essentials such as luminosity, contrast and its companions - focus is necessary.
