Foxes Hockey Team

The goal for this project was to design a logo for a hockey team. The mascot I had to work with was the Bloomfield Foxes.

I started with a reference photo, showing a fox face.
From this image I created the first rough sketch of the logo, focusing on simplifying the shapes of the foxes face.
The next step was the bold outline, with the sketch as a guide. I wanted the mascot to look bold and fierce, so I used strong, simple strokes. I also tweaked the face a bit to give it a scowl.

Next was the color. A lot of sports teams use blue, but it's usually a darker or deeper blue. So for this team, I chose a bright electric blue to stand out and to give energy to their look.
The fox needed some dimension. I added highlights and lowlights to make the logo pop.
The highlights on the forehead and the lowlights under the eyes also helped emphasize the fierce scowl.

My next step was to make a way for the team name, Foxes, to coordinate with the face of the fox.
I chose a big and bold font to compliment the bold outlines of the fox face, and to help emphasize strength and power of the team. Since foxes aren't especially known for these traits, I chose to use design elements to bring these qualities into the team's logo.
The arched shape of the logo added to the powerful look.  I added the strokes and color to continue the elements used in the foxes face.

Next I put the pieces together, along with the town the team was from.
This looked good, but by tweaking it a bit more, I was able to overlap the fox's face and the team name to give the final logo more depth, creating the final logo.
Below are some applications of the logo for the team.
