Horned wolf 90x148(cm) oil on wood 2021

It is one of the works depicting the scene in the picture book <Horned Wolf>, a co-creation of Kim Seung-hwan(Artist) and Kwon Jin-ae(Independent Film Director). The picture book, <Horned Wolf> tells the story of two friends whose lone deer accidentally help a wolf with horns and become friends with each other, but are divided by their own inferiority complex.
The people and plants whose borders are cut along each form show a more vivid presence in front of visitors.
This diversifies the relationship between the person in the work and the space by taking different backgrounds according to the space in which the work is displayed.

The first 'Float a something' work started from the window in my hometown house. That window allowed me to observe nature and my inner self for decades. However, the window was left in the corner of the warehouse after the house was demolished. Every time I saw the window, I felt sorry for it. So I wanted to give a beautiful thing to the window. After the first work, I continue to present beauty to the windows of forgotten houses.

In our lives, we often face situations where we have to make choices even if the results are obvious. It is a work that figuratively expresses the irony of choices, consequences, and fate given to humans through plants with girls.

Deer sense of smell is sensitive, so it senses danger.
Deer also have a great weapon called horns that can protect themselves.
However, deer also have large weaknesses, such as a fragile body and low vision.
I thought that the coexistence of deer's strengths and weaknesses resembled human and their consciousness.
Through these figurative scenes, I am working on solving various aspects of consciousness, characteristics, and further questions about human beings in many ways.

The first 'float something in the window' work started from the window in my hometown. That window allowed me to observe nature and my inner self for decades.
However, the window was left in the corner of the warehouse when the home was demolished.
Every time I saw that window that had been left unattended for years, I felt sorry for it.
So I wanted to give him a beautiful view that he never gets tired of.
Since then, I have been working on floating the landscape in the windows of abandoned houses.

The girl in the window is an image of a dream I sometimes dream of.
The image is probably about a sad and heartbreaking first love.

A girl 42x29.7(cm) Colored pencil on paper 2020

The important thing in this artwork is flowers.
The girl's sensory organs are being replaced by flowers.
She is not divorced from the world. She is looking at the world through flowers.
It is an artwork that asks questions about subjectivity.
I focus on expressing my thoughts and feelings in the artwork.
But I'm ultimately pursuing beauty.

Deer has a slightly lower visual acuity, but they have a keen sense of hearing and sense of smell, so they're good at detecting danger.
I think the deer's figure resembles that of humans and consciousness.
Human consciousness becomes a weapon of self-protection, like the antlers of deer.
And it's an important factor in recognizing various changes outside of human beings, such as deer's sense of hearing and sense of smell.
But sometimes, like deer's fragile body and low vision, it becomes a weakness.
The girl in the artwork is hiding in the forest like a deer and looking at something.
Maybe she's avoiding predators.

I do the work of observing and painting the various human aspects that emerge in life.
And through that work, I'm understanding about my self and a human being.
But ultimately, I want to be an artist who captures and portrays the beauty that exists in every moment.

The plant in the work is the leaf of the black locust (false acasia).
In Korea, this leaf is used to see divination.
(It's actually almost a game.)
Used to determine 'yes or no' and 'to do or not to do',
(Taking off the leaves one by one, yes...no...yes...no....To make a decision with the last leaf.)
But the funny thing is that even if it doesn't go to the end,
the results are somewhat predictable.
But even so, the last leaf has to be removed.
Something similar to this often happens in our lives.
Is this destiny? Or is it a choice?
I'm not sure... only live hard every day.
