Week 2 - Making Visual Media - Icon Profile Picture

During my first week of my course 'Making Visual Media' at Griffith University, we were tasked with a brief that needed to be completed by the following week.

This task as shown below, informed us we would create an icon based on an image of ourselves.

My final image was shown above, being a direct comparison next to the photo it was based on.

This was my first time I had ever used the program Adobe Illustrator, and by following the lesson in class, and watching tutorials online, I feel as though my creation of basic shapes and using the paintbrush/pen tools is proficient.

The following grid depicts my progress from concept ideas to the almost completed final.

The first photo shows my basic hand drawn sketches, including ideas for different colour schemes and styles.

The second shows my finalised option being placed into indesign as a rough idea of how to create the image.

Image three shows my initial basic outline for the icon, before photo four shows a more detailed outline.

Image five shows the initial beginning of creating the background colour, I will be honest and say I didn't remember how to make a circle a this point so I did what I could with my limited knowledge and used the paint brush to draw the black in before playing around with the layers and getting a finalised piece.

The last two images depict my 'finalised' attempt that I took into our class for feedback.

Almost all of the feedback was positive, especially due to my lack of previous experience.
The main thing I took away from this feedback was to change the background colour to see the hat more in printed versions, and to include a colour for this skin tone.

After inputting this feedback, the final image became as seen below.
