Creating Icons #S5164400 #MVM19

Week Two – Making Visual Media

Task: Our client, Pop Haus Digital Design, is redeveloping their website and wants to create a web icon for each member of their staff. Using your own face as reference material, create a concept for an icon as a profile picture. It should be simple and reflect the style of the reference material supplied by the client.
For this simple project, I did not begin with any sketches and instead went straight into illustrator to map out the basic shapes I needed to create my icon. I had to research how to create specific curved shapes like my jawline, which led me to use the pen tool on the smoothest fidelity setting. This also helped me create the shape of my hair. I am glad I picked up this skill during this task.

I then added simple face features, similar to those of the brief we were given. The last step was to use the same pen tool to create the shape of my hair. This added character to the icon, along with the rosy cheek.

Outcome:
I have played around a little bit with Adobe Illustrator in the past, but have never completed a project using it. This was a fun task to learn the basics of creating shapes and getting to know the shortcuts. I enjoyed this task, gained a lot of confidence using the software and am excited to continue creating with it.

Class Feedback:
- Change the one blushing cheek, either by adding one on each side or removing it all together.
- As my reference photo was not on display, it was questioned if my hair colour matched it.

Below are the two other options I played around with after receiving this feedback:
In the end, I do think I like the character without any cheeks at all as it is the most simple and matches the brief the best. Receiving feedback, as well as listening to the feedback on other pieces made me realise the importance of following the brief rather than creating a super unique and characterised icon.
