Blindspot - Performative Space

This project was an outcome of the course scenography. Throughout the course we understood concepts related to semiotics, dramaturgy, theatrical spaces and performance. The brief was to create a scenographic experience, a performative space based on our interpretation of ‘The Metamorphosis’ by Franz Kafka.

First step towards starting the project was to write an artistic statement for the group to have clarity about the experience the collective was trying to achieve.

Keeping in mind all the previous exercises and concepts, we broke down the text of Metamorphosis. This helped us understand, as individuals, what inspired us the most with our unique different perspectives of the text.

Looking at paragraphs that resonated with us helped in gradually building a pallet of  visual representations especially in terms of materiality. We shifted from looking at the text individually to looking at it as one.

Artist Statement

As a group, we are looking for opportunities to transfer literary work into scenographic experiences, aiming to banish the line between the spectator and the performance where, space, time and activity come together to build the character of the performance. We strongly believe that the activity of watching itself has become a theme where, theater becomes a place where the gap between art and life is bridged.
In our work we try to capture the dynamic nature of people and objects and their relation to space. Influenced by concepts like multiplicity, semiotics, existentialism we look to create experiences through both visual mediums and through abstraction, provoking the audience to realism that it is beyond what they just see.
In conclusion, we would like to see our audience look at our work as a take away, where the performance leaves a strong impact and the floor is left open for discussion in regard to the context of the work.

We as a group decided to take Alienation as the theme to work on.
Two important spatial features of alienation were discovered during discussion.
Communication barrier among people.
Being stuck in a place where you don't belong.

Final Concept
Blindspot
The script kept inside the space instructs the protagonist to do certain actions like looking around and waving at the crowd outside. In the end to resolve the conflict, a switch is given which turns the lights inside out. Putting attention on the protagonist making him/her the performer. This can be either liberating or make one feel vulnerable, depending their state of mind at that time.
