THE STENCIL

Weight: 25%
Overview: This assignment challenges you to embrace your developing skills and resources to make a strong statement in the form of stencil design. The history of public art can be traced back to the first forms of visual media. It has the potential to reflect the voice of the community, outside of the usual gallery environments. Street art and stencil artworks create a broad social commentary and can also create chaos within institutionalised environments. Even the censorship or removal of street art can be interpreted as rich and significant reflection of society. Public art is still an underground phenomenon, a subcultural handshake allowing artists to create dialogue and share personal ideals or opinions. Control and freedom within public spaces isn’t consistent internationally, and the energy of public art impacts society and the practitioner in diverse ways. The media itself may not always produce measurable outcomes (such as changes to policy or audience reach), however the process of making public art, always impacts on the maker. Explore the idea that public space is usually reserved for advertising and government signage, and anything other than that is an anomaly.
Technical aspects of this assessment will provide you with a foundation understanding of vector graphics (integral to most creative industries including interior design, product design, digital design and interactive media), laser cutting (beneficial for practitioners in all fields of design and media), preparing files for production and use of new technology. The ability to communicate complex ideas to an unfamiliar audience is also an aspect of visual communication that relates to a wide range of creative practice.

The theme I chose to explore was in relation to 3D Printed Guns.

3D Printed Gun Stencil. A conglomerate of images have been used to make the design. I redrew the Liberator 3D Gun to match the perspective of a 357 Magnum pistol held by Clint Eastwood in  the poster for the movie, Sudden Impact. Clint's head has been replaced with a redrawing of Cody Wilson's head. Cody Wilson designed the Liberator, a 3D printed gun. Which has been downloaded millions of times. The slogan reflects the the cultural slogan from the the movie - Sudden Impact, that being "Go ahead, make my day", however to better reflect the context of the essay this stencil is based on, the cultural slogan is replaced to say "Make my Gun", which makes the connection between the gun and the person holding it. The icons to the right of the picture reflect the ease of how this 3D printed gun can be acquired..

PRESENTATION BOARD BRIEF
All creative professions require practitioners to present work visually to an audience. As a student, your audience is your peers and teaching team. In industry, you may need to present your ideas visually to clients, art directors, clients or project stakeholders.
This weeks brief invites you to create a presentation board, communicating the interior environment within a space on the QCA campus. You can select either the Gold Coast or South Bank campus (content has been provided for both).
Concept presentations may be digital or printed. The layout principals are similar for both. Set your presentations up to ensure they are suitable for print, they are then easily adapted for web.
SEE THE BELOW DETAILS FOR THIS WEEKS TASK.
Specifications.

Use Adobe InDesign

A3 Landscape (one page)

Ensure all images are 300ppi (suitable for print)

Use a grid.
Content. Include the following within your layout:

A floor plan.

Images of the rooms and facilities. Select one ‘hero’ image.

Ensure the layout has a strong hierarchy.

Project Title: QCA Design Studios (Insert campus location)
Project description: The Queensland College of Art has a diverse range of studio spaces designed to support Design students during their degree. Our laboratories, studios and discipline-specific spaces have been custom designed to engage Griffith students in an optimal learning experience. These spaces span a broad spectrum of study areas and industries. Our workspaces are perfect for unleashing creativity and delving deeper into a range of arts practices.
Additional notes: You have been provided with a range of images. Some will not have a resolution suitable for print. It is your job to select the most appropriate images (relating to both aesthetics and print resolution).
Challenges for advanced students:

Create a logo for each presentation board that reflects the design specific campus facilities.

Explore the location indicated in the floor plan and take your own photos to include in the presentation board.

Create sketches and scan them to create digital elements for your presentation board.

Create vector elements (eg: diagrams, keys) to add information to your layout.

Generate more engaging and informative text to accompany the images.

Poster Assessment 4
Overview: Poster design has a rich and dynamic history. During times of war and conflict, Agitprop posters became integral to communicate messages of freedom, justice, change and action. In contemporary society, we are flooded with marketing, advertising, propaganda and political media in all aspects of life. With this in mind, you will create your own agitational poster design. Your work will critique an aspect of print media and recontextualise existing media to communicate your message.
Technical aspects of this assessment will add to your understanding of vector graphics and raster images (integral to most creative industries including interior design, product design, digital design and interactive media), commercial printing (beneficial for practitioners in all fields of design and media when communicating ideas to clients, employers, investors and peers), preparing files for production and interaction with external stakeholders (including requesting quotes, timeframe, job specifications and payment details). The ability to communicate complex ideas to an unfamiliar audience is also an aspect of visual communication that relates to a wide range of creative practice. Examples of previous student work is located on the course Instagram account.
Theme: Locate one magazine and select an aspect to critique. (You could choose a specific image, an article, the overall publication theme or a combination of these things.)
The most obvious theme is often identified in fashion magazines, reflecting the objectification of women, unrealistic beauty standards or the lack of diverse representation of models. Consider investigating how different types of people are represented, fake news, advertising messages, the reality of celebrity culture, lack of critical information, consumer culture, misrepresentation of subcultures, commercialisation of culture, trends. Importantly, these themes contain messages that are designed to influence us all on a regular basis. By investigating these ideas and using them in our work, we generate a deeper understanding of how they impact on our lives and our sense of self. Additionally, we can begin to reflect on the types of messages we will produce and deliver to the world, as emerging designers. Ensure that your theme is specific and aim to identify something that is original.
Components: Each poster will include:
Vector images (complex and deliberate, reflecting the extent of your skill level by the end of the trimester).
Text created in InDesign and
Raster images. The raster images will consist of cut and paste (analogue) collage from your selected magazine. Your raster images (collage) can be manipulated using InDesign only.
Some elements in your design meet the edge of the page, to demonstrate your use of bleed, crop marks and margins. (Avoid adding a white boarder around the edge of your poster)
An academic reference identifying your source material (eg: magazine). It is recommended that your reference is in the bottom right hand corner, 6mm from the edge of the page in 6pt font. The reference should be small and not a feature of your work.
These posters are intended to provoke thought to habitat loss due to mining. A local example for me is the debate around the threatened species of the Black Throated Finch and a coal mine proposed in Queensland, Australia.
