BAKU'S RAG BOOK
Baku's (child in Gujarati) rag book is a collection of twelve stories based on the life of mill workers of Ahmedabad which was known as the Manchester of the East. This project was done as a part of the open elective course where 50 such books were made. In this process we discovered inspiring stories of the discarded old cotton mills and of the men and women who stitch these stories together. The process included visiting the shut down textile mills in Ahmedabad, interacting with the families of the mill workers and mapping the stories.
PROCESS
The stories collected were illustrated for the development of screens for screen printing. Discarded textiles were used to form the pages of the book which were then stitch bound. The rag books were thus washable and non tearable making it suitable for children. The use of discarded textiles collected from different places made each rag book unique in appearance.
