Ocean of Spirituality – Creating meaningful prayer

“We feel most comfortable when things are certain, but we feel most alive when they’re not.”
Salaah is compulsory upon every Muslim , however we all get side tracked when we’re caught up with such busy lives. As student’s to break away between classes to go to the Mosque for prayer can be difficult and having no prayer facility in the college is another unwarranted inconvenience.

After doing research on the number of Muslim student’s in Greenside Design Center , I’ve conducted a number of 30 Muslim students in a college of less than 500. Majority of the Muslim student’s miss their prayer due to the unavailable facility.

My design solution was then posed with the question “how might we accomodate prayer facility for the students making it more engaging and enjoyable?”

After research I found that water is the element which enhances spirituality as well as being visually calming , bringing about stability. The colour blue has the same effect and is the most loved colour globally.
Hence I have decided to solve the problem by creating prayer cards. The aim of the interactive cards are to help Muslim students better engage with their prayer making the outcome of fun which is play which  in my context “play” would be the action of prayer a pleasurable one.
There are four categories of prayer cards; hope, belief, forgiveness and praise. Each category will contain 7 cards with Quranic scriptures aiming to connect the internal feeling of the person with the scripture in their prayer.

Hand rendered paintings used within the poster design for the prayer cards.
My experimentation consisted of paint splatters in a kitchen sink as well as light reflected on water in a glass kettle onto a wall. The light on water reflections photography became the final outcome of the background imagery.

Within the existing grids on the wall, I placed the cards in a row according to the four different categories.

Muslim students at GDC were asked to acknowledge their current feelings and pick a card off of the grid wall best suited to their emotion. The design at the back of the card containing the scriptures were unknown to the students.
The student may/may not use to the scripture chosen for their prayer , however they were asked to give me some insight as to how they felt after engaging with the card in comparison to how they felt before. The results were a success , as many student's felt uplifted , motivated and found themselves in a state of tranquility.
