Butterfly Dream 2019

“I dreamed I was a butterfly,
flitting around in the sky;
then I awoke. Now I wonder:
Am I a man who dreamt of being a butterfly,
or am I a butterfly dreaming that I am a man?”
 —Zhuangzi

Butterfly Dream 2019
Inspired by the story from Zhuangzi, the iconic Daoist philosopher in ancient China, the project proposes an unconventional way to interpret the Daoist philosophy. It can be seen as an active dialogue and dynamic process of inquiring and formulating the philosophy through the visual means.

By the three sets of oppositional keywords (namely order/disorder, presence/absence, fiction/reality), contradictions are utilized as design methods and lead to peculiar visualization. During the process, the mutual relationships between not only the oppositional keywords but also the designer, tool and design objects are questioned and re-interpreted.

The publication is more than a documentation of the design process but manifests itself as what Butterfly Dream looks like through the eye of contemporary graphic design.
