Artists Showcase, The Core Theatre, 2013

I am developing the notion of simultaneously being audience and performer.
On March the 1st 2013 I set up my stall in the lower bar of The Core Theatre in Corby.
As the audience arrived, they could see me constructing the sculptural surface onto which I was going to draw the perfomance that was taking place that evening - The Artists Showcase.  The three minute call went out to the audience to take their seats in the auditorium. This was my cue to take my place on the balcony.
The director had asked if I needed any lighting. I turned to offer down as I wanted to communicate exactly the experience of being in a theatre - a darkened vast space, full of people, experiencing as one the architectural space, sense of place and the emotional and comical narratives and deeply felt musical journeys being expressed on stage. And also, through not being able to see what I was doing, my marks would be more dynamic and exciting.
When the show finished, I quickly exited and set up the finished piece in the bar. My fellow audience members, I was relieved to discover,  were interested and intrigued  -  and unaware of my presence I had also succeeded in being incognito - part of the performance - but also not; I didn't want to ditract from the performances.
In terms of a successful art work - it could be improved - there are parts that I findf awkard and ordinarily would want to change, but if I did it would take away from its spirit and detract from its ethos, so it shall remain as a raw response.
I am intigued myself as to where this project is heading and am itching to emerse myself once again into the hypnotic world of the theatre.
