Butt on Butt | a chair design from the finish to the start
Butt on Butt is a chair made during the Superform module of the Innovation Design Engineering postgraduate programme in Royal College of Art and Imperial College London. At the beginning of the module, I am given an inspiring word "tension". Then I start to imagine the tension between human butt and the chair. What if the chair also becomes a butt to increase the intimacy and comfortableness? Below is the reverse order of my creation process.

Phase 3: Butt on Butt 1:5 scale model made of cardboard

Phase 2: Butt on Butt 1:1 scale model made of foam boards and foam spray on the top. The quality of the surface is hard to be controlled, so the ongoing project went through rounds of material experiments.

Phase 1: Butt on Butt 1:10 scale model made of silicone and negative mould. The experimenting material is one type of silicone named Ecoflex-0035. The softness and texture of the material resemble human skin. Many colleagues couldn't stop touching the model because of the comfortableness and the size of the chair.
