"Drets Humans" in Catalan, or "Human Rights" in English, is a collaborative mural I created with Secondary students at Instituto Rubió y Ors in L'Hospitalet, Barcelona, Spain. Painted on a huge empty wall in the playground, the concept was based on the students' current studies. Inspired by the United Nations List of Universal Human Rights, each of the 12 wall sections was given a theme - for example: 1) The Right to Free Education, 2) The Right to Freedom of Expression, 3) The Right to Work in Safe and Fair Conditions, 4) The Right to Safety and Asylum, and so on. (The list was simplified for clarity and space).
Large scale text coincides with simple iconography and emoji-like imagery, designed by the students in the lower areas and myself in higher-reaching parts. The imagery is symbolic, leading to a conceptual and multi-faceted discussion of what freedom and human rights signify. Together the bright color palette forms a positive view of a world with peace and a more brilliant future.
