Icon Design | Student Outcomes

Brief
Students worked in a group of 4/5, to develop six Icons for chosen brand. The steps taken to complete projects were as following:
1. CHOOSE A BUSINESS identify and observe the location. Consider how your six ICONS can be installed in the space and where you will install them. Locate each ICON in six specific but different locations.
Here are some questions to ask yourself as you explore:
• What places require signs in order to navigate them effectively?
• Is there a particular space which makes you think about it in a new way to communicate and interact?
• How do we navigate spaces on a daily basis? What learned interactions are so automatic we no longer think about them?
2. DOCUMENT YOUR SPACE Once you have selected a location, visit the location several times and record the space documenting its use. Take photographs, sketch, and diagram.
3.RESEARCH Write, brainstorm, mind map.
What important things happen here?
What rules inhabitants follow?
What tools are the inhabitants of this space using to navigate it effectively?
4. SKETCH Start generating ideas for the six icons.
Imagine an outsider visiting the space and knows nothing about the customs of this location. How could you design a visual signage system to help them navigate despite the boundaries of culture and language?
