It is human nature to want to have a sense of control or order over our surroundings. In science we can see that illustrated through the means of cloning and the attempt to create new genetically engineered specimens. In the series of watercolors I created for this exhibit, I sought to give up some of that control by collecting random input on Facebook. I asked friends to select an animal name and a number between 1-100 (the numbers corresponded to a randomly generated list of other animal names). I then used this information to generate new animal combinations, which formed the basis of these watercolors. While the process was intended to move away from human attempts to control nature (and outcomes), the resultant work may also raise questions about how random human interventions also impact the natural world.
