Clomiphene citrate 50 mgClomiphene citrate 50 mg is an anti-estrogen drug prescribed to women for the treatment of anovulatory infertility (inability to ovulate). In clinical medicine, the drug belongs to the group of nonsteroidal ovulation stimulants. The drug interacts with estrogen receptors, often antagonistically, in various body tissues, including the hypothalamus, pituitary, ovaries, endometrium, vagina, and cervix.
Clomid counteracts the negative feedback of estrogen on the hypothalamic-pituitary-ovarian axis, increasing the release of gonadotropin (LH and FSH). This surge in gonadotropin levels can lead to the release of an egg (follicular rupture), which is ideally accompanied by conception. Chemically, clomiphene citrate is a synthetic estrogen that has both agonistic and antagonistic properties, and is therefore very similar in structure and effect to the drug. It is believed that the estrogenic and anti-estrogenic properties of clomiphene play an important role in its ability to support conception in women.
