Medical Research Building
Medical research building associated to the Clinico's Madrid Hospital 2009
The aim of the project was to build a medical research centre associated to the Clinic Hospital of Madrid, designed by architect Manuel Sánchez Arcas and ingeneer Manuel Torroja and built between 1932 and 1936.
The new building is designed, in addition, to solve the problem of accessibility of the current hospital. Nowadays there is not a clear main access to the Clinico's, the entry wich is most used lacks free space and a place for cars to stop and leave or pick up patients. So, the first thing to do was to bury the external consultation area (a subsequent one floor adition) and set up a square with a new main access to the hospital. The new medical research building is placed in the other end of the plaza. The vertical and rigid volume of the building (research area) faces the Clinico's and harmonize with it. And the horizontal and more public area (educational area) acts as a connection between both buildings and, by means of its flexible shapes, relates to the park in the other side.
