"How to Ride" animated video for DART

In 2019, DART (Dallas Area Rapid Transit) launched a new way to pay for your rail and bus fare. Called the "GoPass Tap", these reloadable transit cards cut down on waste from paper passes, saved the rider time by not having to purchase a ticket each time they rode, and ultimately saved the customer money, with various fare capping options.

DART traditionally would have shot a video using model talent and actual vehicles to explain this new system. The Marketing team was concerned about costs, as some elements of the program were in flux, and any changes would lead to costly reshoots and editing. I proposed an animated video to provide both up-front and long-term savings to the agency.

We kept up-front costs down by doing all the work in-house, except for the voice-over talent. The script was written by a member of our Communications team, the illustrations were either created by me, or modified by our team from stock images, and I handled all the storyboarding, animation and editing.

I deliberately kept the flow of the video modular, so that it could be broken up into short elements for use on social media and on DART’s digital kiosks and wayfinding. The modular system also allows for new elements to be added seamlessly, as features and benefits rolled out at later dates.
