Costume Institute Celebrates Camp

After a successful career presiding over Arts Britannia Ltd., an exclusive fine arts tour company based in London, Marjorie G. Rosen continues to be a fervent patron of the arts. Marjorie G. Rosen resides in New York City and is a member of Friends of the Costume Institute, a section of the Metropolitan Museum of Art that focuses on fashion.

In spring 2019, the Costume Institute will open the exhibition Camp: Notes on Fashion, which celebrates the influence of the extravagant and unpretentious elements of Camp in modern clothing design.

The qualities of true Camp were first dissected by writer Susan Sontag in her highly-praised essay Notes on Camp. In this piece, Sontag isolated the characteristics that separate camp from similar aesthetic concepts such as kitsch or pop art, including a sense of exuberance and a focus on style over content.

The exhibition will highlight the reemergence of Camp in contemporary fashion, including outlandish and subversive looks from high-end fashion houses such as Gucci, Balenciaga, and iconic designer Miuccia Prada. Camp: Notes on Fashion will run at the Met Fifth Avenue Museum from May to September.
