Toraja Birdhouse
Micron pen on Illustration board, 2018
Toraja is an indigenous ethnic group from South Sulawesi, Indonesia. The traditional Torajan house, Tongkonan, is a massive wooden structure, topped with an arc-shape roof and decorated with complex wooden carving on the walls. It is a symbol of strong relationship between their ancestors, present living, and future family.

In this illustration, I studied how rules of perspectives can be applied on the Tongkonan house. Sitting on top of it is the endangered Rhinoceros Hornbill, locals call it Rangkong Badak. Some believe that this hornbill is the supreme chief of the birds. Therefore, I decided to dedicate this birdhouse to the most special bird on earth.
