​​​​​One Capsule Renovation Project/一個のカプセルリノベーションプロジェクト

One capsule renovation project is a part of the bigger project regarding the renovation of the famous Nakagin Capsule Tower in Tokyo - the icon of Japanese avant-garde movement called Metabolism, and the original capsule building making a starting point for capsule hotels. Although the fate of this piece of architecture is uncertain the capsules are being renovated on their own by the owners themselves or through the enthusiastic collaboration of different parties, one of which resulted in this renovation project. 

Since the creator of the building, Kisho Kurokawa, himself thought to update capsules through time, the renovation works implied reconsideration of the capsule's design to fit modern times. Moreover, the capsule dilapidated until the bones, thus, ironically, except the unit bathroom made from plastic, there was nothing more to preserve. We decided to turn this disadvantage into opportunity. 

What is why sofa storage was created. It leans to the visiting card of the capsule - round window and taking aside the beautiful view on former imperial gardens and Tokyo Bay, the average person perfectly fits inside. Except for another storage near the window, the remaining space is empty corresponding to a zero function which may convert from here to any other. 

The spacious cutting edge electronics for 1970s, if updated, nowadays fit inside a smartphone, leaving the more space for the resident oneself. Moreover, the capsule gets a piece of IOT what seems to remain a trend for the next decades. Lights, sound and air conditioning are controlled by apps installed into a smartphone, therefore, the resident is able to adjust (metabolize) the space depending on one's preferences. The resident, when moved in, receives instruction on how to set up space, making it, in a sense, the electronic device itself because the truly futuristic concept of a capsule home should not be omitted. 

What, nevertheless, does not fit inside the current paradigms of social individualistic behaviors, thus, the capsule itself may deserve its own identity. The unique Ukrainian pattern combining both of two cultures and, nonetheless, traditions together with technology is created in Ukraine and brought to the capsule to decorate one of the walls, making possible to feel cozy inside the allegorical spaceship. 

In any case, the capsule project fulfills the goal to become a liveable space again, gains public support and, lastly, contributes to a revival of the rare capsule architecture.

建物の創造者にいた黒川紀章氏もある時間を通じてカプセルデザインを最新化しようと思っていたから、新しい提案も元々のインテリアを現在に合わせる再評価を含んだ。また、カプセルが構造が見えてくるまで非常に老朽したので、皮肉にプラスチックから作られたユニットバス以外他の物を保存できるものはなかった。それでも、この問題をきっかけとして見ることにした。

その考え方は丸窓ソファーを作成したわけである。カプセルの特色である丸窓に直接に位置された、普通人にぴったりしたソファーから浜離宮恩賜庭園や東京港の景色は展開している。ドアにある他の収納以外には残ったスペースは空いており、これから決まった機能によってゼロファンクションから変化していける。

カプセルにあった、スペースをずいぶん占めていた1970年代の超近代的な電気製品は現在最新化されると全部スマホに入られ、住人自身の生活のために空間を譲る。さらに、カプセルは次の年代を通じて流行のことになりそうなIOT（モノのインターネット)をある程度与えられる。照明、エアコン、音はスマホにインストールされたアプリで制御される。このように引っ越ししたところの住人は個人的な好みによって環境を設定（メタボライジング）できる。新住人はカプセルに引っ越せば、カプセルの設定の説明書をもらうことで、ある意味ではカプセルは自身電子デバイスになるようである。なぜなら、そもそもカプセル的な家の未来派的のイメージという根本的な性質を見落とすべきではないと思うからである。

しかし、こんなコンセプトは現個人主義的社会の事情に合わせないらしいであるので、カプセルも自分のアイデンティティーをもらえると思った。ウクライナで作られ、輸入されたユニークな刺繍は両方の文化及び伝統とテクノロジーを融合し、カプセルの壁を飾るからには、この比喩的な宇宙船では居心地の良さを感じるのを可能にする。

それでも、当カプセルプロジェクトはカプセルを住むに適するところを作り、市民支援を得り、さらにこの稀なカプセル建築を再生させる案に貢献する目的を果たす。
