For my series of book jackets, I chose to make a series of continuous book jackets that revolved around coming of age novels; my series features The Perks of Being a Wallflower, The Outsiders, and A Clockwork Orange. These pieces are classics as both books and films. With an emphasis on typography and a sort of formal design quality, I selected a serif font: Waterfall for the front cover after some font trials. I traced over the text, added doodles, and brought it onto Illustrator after scanning the finished product. On Illustrator, I made the text white and left the doodles in black to emphasize the idea of being an outsider. I used Core Humanist Sans for the title and spines; on the back of each cover has a different font: Moon Light, Yellow Lime Display, and Rusty Cola Pen. For the inside matter and the flaps of the book jackets, I used Garamond.
As a homage to the original books, I chose colors that were relate to the original book covers and added in images from their movie counterparts to show the impact these books have had on society. Mohawk’s Strathmore Writing Wove Soft White 88 CB was selected as my paper selection for two reasons: 1) the texture feels like generic printer paper but thicker thanks to the cover nature and 2) it’s not a pure white—which comes off less innocent as they are transitioning from children into teenagers or adults.
