What to Consider When Organizing a Race

A four-time recipient of the California Super Lawyer Rising Star distinction, Kalley Aman draws upon more than 17 years of experience in her role as an employment law attorney with the Los Angeles, California, firm Buchalter Nemer, PC. Beyond her professional pursuits, Kalley Aman enjoys running and has competed in the Manhattan Beach 10K regularly since 2011.

The 2018 Manhattan Beach 10K Run featured 3,400 participants between the ages of 6 and 91. Planning a race to accommodate for that many people can be challenging, but runners will have less anxiety about its success if they follow the appropriate steps and plan accordingly.

One of the most important things to consider with a race of that size is adequate water stations and post-run meals. Hydration is essential during a long run so aim to have water stations every two miles. Moreover, post-run food options should be high in protein to aid in recovery; consider options such as protein bars, sandwiches, chocolate milk, or bananas.

While accommodating a large group of runners requires proper planning, the first step is to make your race an attractive option for prospective participants. Designing a course that will appeal to runners is the first step in that regard. In doing so, avoid sharp turns and down-and-back routes that force runners to constantly change direction and lose momentum.

In regard to registration, it's imperative to have a mobile-compatible website that allows users to quickly register and details essential information concerning race logistics. Planners should also implement a tiered pricing structure that rewards those who sign up early.
