Bat Sports Team Logo

I think I can name this series "Trying to fix some terrible logos", because after coming across this picture in my folder, I knew I had to break out Illustrator to give it a fresh start. Polishing the terrible raster quality and the inconsistent stroke thickness won't fix a design as poorly thought out as this. The title of the file was "Charlotte Midnights" and I'm guessing that the crescent moon was supposed to be the 'C' for Charlotte, and the creature in the middle of it was supposed to be a bat. But why make the color scheme for a team called the Midnights a terrible shade of teal and a sickly mustard yellow is beyond me. So I cracked my knuckles and tried to correct my past mistakes.
The first step to making this logo better was to rethink how I wanted to make the bat in the middle. And the main problem the first logo failed was because it's not identifiable that the creature in the middle is supposed to be a bat. Besides for the Batman-esque wings, nothing pointed to a bat. So I made the bat anatomically correct, gave it it's ridged ears, and trademark fangs. Easy fix. But the colors needed severe changes, and with that we needed to figure out who the team should represent. I booted the Charlotte idea because I don't think Charlotte is known for it's night life. Instead I gave it to Chicago for three reasons. 1) We can keep the crescent moon C. 2) Chicago is a large city with good notable nightlife. 3) This gave me room to play around with the team's colors. If you are unaware of Chicago's state flag, the colors are blue and white horizontal stripes with yellow stars. If I darken the blue to a midnight blue, and lighten the yellow, I have a base for a very memorable color combination. Plus, when I get around to the teams typography, I can play around with giving the "i" in Chicago a yellow star again referencing their state flag.
