Fly in My Soup

Sitting one day, thinking about the creative process and a need to get a new idea going, a fly buzzed around my head. As mentioned before, I tend to feel all things are connected. Whether it was karma or chance or the understanding of lateral thinking that chanced that fly to pass by, but a notion popped in my head. It came from the old jocular ditty about a fly being in somebodies soup.

I thought on, and was trying to discover this connection. Then it just popped in there. I saw an image of a toad (or frog) extending it’s tongue in order to snag a passing fly. We’ve all seen it on those documentaries; in slow motion. As my theme was initiated with the ‘sneaker snail’ (on the previous page), I wanted to extend this form of quirky illustration with this notion of a toad and a fly. This is when the connection came about the soup.

For some reason, the idea of a gentlemen having an after dinner conversation about the annoyance of such an insect in their dinner was the most rewarding answer to the design aspect. After some research on these amphibians, I decided on toads, as they had more interesting textures, and always brought to mind the ‘grizzling old man’ feel, I was after.
