Renters with Low-Income Backgrounds Face Affordable

A successful entrepreneur, Karun Sreerama, PhD, serves as the principal of Houston-based SRRE Developers and Builders, which he founded. Focused on supporting post-Hurricane Harvey recovery, Dr. Karun Sreerama develops and constructs affordable housing in Houston.

According to a 2018 report from the National Low Income Housing Coalition (NLIHC), average rent is significantly more than low-income earners can afford. For instance, a low-income household earning around $26,420 annually can only afford about $660 per month for housing. However, the national average for one- and two-bedroom homes is, $931 and $1,149 per month, respectively, which puts them out of reach of low-income families.

People living on social security retirement or disability benefits also cannot afford modest housing, with average rent amounting to more than a beneficiary’s entire monthly benefit in 220 housing markets. The NLIHC report estimates there is a shortage of 7.2 million affordable rental homes nationwide. While federal housing programs exist to help struggling individuals and their families, they are chronically underfunded, leaving many people in need of housing assistance to fend for themselves or end up on the street.
