Interactive Book Projection

“How can the aspect of digital media be involved in a conventional children’s book event?”
The interactive book projection prototype is research in order to discover possible interactions related to the analog and digital book with the emphasis on the story and storytelling in the group reading events. Based on the example of the Persian children’s story  “The little black fish” by Samad Behrangi from 1967.

Team members:
2 designers from Digital media field
Research:
To find problems that user may have to read a book, we have done a research.
Children prefers parent read story for them and it makes close connection between them.
Users are not enough focused to go alone through all process.
Children like group work and completing a task.

Target group: Children between 6 to 9 years old

Solutions:
A person as a guide read story and help children how to interact with the book. Also, if the design be interactive, children are more encouraged to listen or read a story.

Location:
Duiburg city library was selected as a location to find out what possibility location offers. Different installation ideas has been explored.
Story
In order to design storyboard we have read the story and summarized it into small cards. Then I have drawn sketches from each screen. Later we thought about possible interaction in each seen and how user can interact with the book.
Mood board
I have explored different design style in Persian arts and learned about type of layout, texture, colors. Moreover, elements such as cloth texture, nature, animal and forms that used in have collected to come up with a design that connect to the story.

We designed characters to find a proper design styles.
Bring out the feeling of story into practice
A video projector installed top of paper book that only projects animations. But user can interact with it.
An out of book composition designed to show the main concept of the book going from limited pond to the sea.

Exploration of other possible interactions
User test
A user test is done with children at library
At the result we found out the need for the navigation guide. Also, resolution of animation was low by the projector. However, the level of interest was with the users was high.
