Packing Light When Traveling

Fernando De La Lama, a passionate traveler based in Florida, has visited numerous countries. Most recently, he traveled to Bolivia, Panama, Colombia, and Chile. During his trips to these countries, Fernando De La Lama enjoyed plenty of new experiences relating to local culture and food.

Regular travelers know the importance of packing light. Carry-on luggage is not only better for exploring a new city, but also saves on baggage fees and eliminates the risk of an airline losing a bag.

Far-fetched as it may sound, using a large bag for packing often results in overpacking. With a larger bag, you are tempted to fill the space you have. As a result, you won’t prioritize when packing. Meanwhile, when you start with a smaller bag, you’ll have an easier time seeing how much space is left. This limitation will compel prioritization of items.

Once you get the right bag, you may still struggle with fitting in enough clothes, particularly for longer trips. This can be overcome by some creative packing. For example, instead of packing heavy coats for winter weather, pack light layers. Having light layers gives clothes a dual purpose since they can not only keep you warm, but also give you something comfortable to wear if weather is warmer than expected.

Further, always expect that you’ll need to do laundry when traveling for more than one week. Many hotels offer on-site laundry services, but you can also look for off-site laundromats to wash your clothes or use some soap and water to do a small load in your hotel sink. By washing your clothes, you can pack less while still accommodating multi-week trips.

Finally, pack only the need-to-haves based on what you expect the best-case scenario to be during your trip. If any problems arise, new clothes can always be purchased in whatever country you are visiting.
