K A N A

In the second semester of my BA at Moholy-Nagy University of Art and Design, our task was to design a tentative sitting stool which could be easily disassembled and put together, had to experiment with different materials and connecting them in an interesting way, as well as to strike out effective joints. In the designing process the most important thing for me was to keep the construct as simple as it could be. The design reflects the art of sodo. The name, Kana is also the name of the Japanese writing system. This construction contains several symbols from this writing method.
You can perceive the symbols from different angles and how you put it together. Probably the most noticeable are the 木 means tree, 天 means heaven. Calligraphy is one of the Japanese Arts. With emotional wealth it can be really abstract. In the course of design this managed me to made my construction. Four フ katakana based element produce the main construct and one steel profile yoke them together. To piece together every part goes one after another. There are two ways to put it together. The two forms of the stool show the signs.
