Geometric Portrait

For this project, we were challenged to choose a portrait photograph of ourselves and make it into a portrait made from geometric shapes using Adobe Illustrator. The portrait had to match the color profile of the image we had chosen. There was to be a gradient background with the lightest portion of the photo being positioned closest to the eyes of the portrait.

I had originally decided on a picture that had me wearing headphones, most likely an image of me before a live stream session. I had managed to get the face and hair finished, however, when I went to colorize my shapes the image was not a pleasant experience, to say the least. The colors were too washed out. So I decided to find a different image. I first started on making simple shapes, mostly triangles or simple polygons. I then moved on to the eyes and decided to change a few things and used different shapes. I moved through the image highlighting details of my portrait with different shapes in the hopes that it would give a more detailed image. I did some research on other geometric portraits online and saw that people used triangles a lot. I also noticed how this changed the details with hair and clothing. Moving on to the hair, I began with triangles working from the middle of the head to the left, and then I went back from the middle to the right. Next, I went to the ears and used numerous triangle shapes to outline and fill in my ear. After I had got all of the shapes set, I went through with the Eyedropper Tool and chose colors from within each shape. Finally, I chose colors in the background that were both pleasing and bright to accentuate my portrait.

I learned many things through this assignment. One of which is how to better use the Pen Tool to make shapes as well as utilize Bézier curves. Another useful technique I learned was how to use shapes in various quantities to give details to artwork and images. I also learned how to determine color within shapes made from the Pen Tool to better detail a portrait such as shadows, features, clothing, etc.
