Yaskylski's Art Nouveau

Time erases history together with the people who were part of it. Sometimes peoples themselves contribute to erasing of the names of dissidents, who did not take root in the prevailing system of the majority. But such peoples create history by their actions.
Architecture can tell us a lot about people, the era and even nature. The whole decor of the house speaks about the epoch of its construction in 1903 and modern style. Also, the architectural approach and techniques speak about Stanislav Shabunevskiy- the architect, author of the outstanding buildings in Gomel and nearby cities in those time. Shabunevsky was repressed along with his name, which system tried to erase from the streets of the city largely built up by him. You can learn more about the architect in the film.

I had to recreate the appearance of the building from several post-war photographs and drawings with common dimensions that Sergey Lyapin found. He helped in the reconstruction of the object, preparing the materials and drawing of the facade with a description of the decorative elements. Thank you. The volume of the building and the decor were altered many times in search of the best shape of lines and harmonious proportions. Some elements were sculpted from zero. I wanted to make the building as close as possible to the original project, to understand the idea and approaches of the architect.
In the graphic part, I wanted to show that Gomel, which is no longer there, to help find oneself in the pre-revolutionary centre of the city with quiet streets that people walk along.
It is a pity that the building did not reach us in its original form, only the walls remained after the Second World War. The roof, windows and floors were destroyed, and the decor was well worn. In 1953 the building at 22 Sovetskaya Street completely changed the facade. It lost an idea that was previously intertwined with river motifs. The refinement and thoughtfulness of the parts that were built during 1903 disappeared.

Thank for Watching
